Chronic Insomnia and Creativity - Can They Coexist?

Written by, Patsy Dale

As someone who has struggled with chronic insomnia since childhood, I can attest to the challenges of balancing a creative career with a lack of sleep. On the one hand, insomnia can provide ample time for creative reflection and brainstorming, but on the other hand, it can also lead to burnout, decreased productivity, and a myriad of health issues. As a woman over 50, single, with little to no family left, this can also be an emotional issue.

One of the biggest struggles of having chronic insomnia as a creative person is the constant battle between wanting to work on my craft and prioritizing my health, which in all honesty, I am not great at. Sometimes I've pushed myself too hard, staying up late into the night to work on a project, only to suffer the consequences the next day as my body and mind struggle to function correctly. Another challenge is the feeling of isolation that can come with insomnia. I have in the past called a loved one in the family or checked in on an elderly or sick friend to gain some clarity that life must go on, and when we do for others, like reaching out and catching up, we can find a way to settle in for the night and be grateful about the good things in life.

Can Creativity and Chronic Insomnia Co-exist?
Chronic Insomnia Is A Real Issue!

When you're awake while the rest of the world is asleep, it can be challenging to find others to connect with or to find support from; this can be especially true for creative people, who often work unconventional hours and may feel like they're out of sync with the rest of society.

Despite these challenges, however, there are ways to cope with chronic insomnia and pursue a creative career. Some strategies that have worked for me include prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries around work and sleep, and seeking support from others who understand what I'm going through. I have also found that herbal supplements, and even CBD in any form, help my brain be open to thoughts of wanting to rest, go to bed, and begin to wind down. Before taking any sleep supplements like Valerian Root, Kava Kava Root, Chamomile, Magnesium, Melatonin, and other natural herbs, you must check with your physician.

While chronic insomnia can be a difficult and frustrating experience, it's important to remember that it doesn't have to define you or your creative pursuits. With the right mindset and support, finding ways to work around insomnia and continue to create and thrive is possible.
